At the heart of our provision is a commitment to ensuring that every pupil receives the support they need to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Our personalised support pathway combines high-quality academic intervention, therapeutic provision and specialist external services to remove barriers to learning and enable every young person to achieve their full potential. Support is reviewed regularly and tailored to individual needs, ensuring that provision remains responsive, targeted and impactful.

Additional Learning Support (ALS)

Our Additional Learning Support (ALS) provision delivers targeted academic intervention designed to address gaps in learning, build confidence and improve outcomes. Working alongside a pupil's regular timetable, ALS provides personalised support in foundational English and mathematics, whilst addressing a range of other specific learning needs. Evidence-based interventions such as phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, literacy catch-up, grammar, punctuation and spelling, handwriting, numeracy development, and understanding of the four mathematical operations are embedded within the programme. Structured one-to-one and small group interventions are recognised as effective approaches for supporting pupils with identified learning needs and helping them make sustained progress.

Provision may include:

  • Phonics and reading interventions

  • Reading fluency and comprehension support

  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS)

  • Handwriting development

  • Number work and numeracy catch-up

  • Understanding and application of the four operations

  • Vocabulary and oral language development

  • Study skills and metacognition strategies

  • GCSE access arrangements and specialist examination support

  • Bespoke interventions matched to individual learning needs

ALS is a full-time provision delivered alongside each pupil's timetable by a dedicated member of staff. Half-termly pupil progress meetings are used to review outcomes, assess need and plan targeted interventions for the following half term, ensuring support remains personalised and responsive.

Additional Theraputic Support (ATS)

Our Additional Therapeutic Support (ATS) provision focuses on supporting pupils' social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, helping them to develop resilience, emotional regulation and positive relationships. The provision is led by a dedicated staff member who is a registered psychologist, providing specialist expertise and oversight of individual therapeutic programmes.

ATS offers a range of interventions including:

  • Counselling

  • Play Therapy

  • LEGO® Therapy

  • Basic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Thrive interventions

  • Emotional regulation programmes

  • Anxiety management and coping strategies

  • Self-esteem and confidence building

  • Social skills development

  • Attachment and relationship-based interventions

  • Anger management and emotional literacy support

  • Trauma-informed and nurture-based approaches

  • 1:1 and small group SEMH interventions

The Thrive Approach is used to identify and support social and emotional developmental needs through personalised interventions and targeted activities, helping pupils build emotional wellbeing and readiness to learn.

ATS operates as a full-time provision alongside the school timetable, ensuring therapeutic support is integrated into each pupil's educational experience and can be accessed when needed throughout the school day.

External Support

We work closely with a range of external professionals who attend The Maple School to ensure pupils benefit from specialist expertise and multi-agency support.

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language interventions are delivered within school to support pupils experiencing communication, language and interaction difficulties. Programmes are tailored to individual needs and integrated with classroom and intervention support.

Educational Psychology

Educational Psychologists attend school on a weekly basis, providing specialist assessment, consultation and intervention planning. Their input helps to identify barriers to learning and informs personalised strategies across our Additional Learning Support (ALS), Additional Therapeutic Support (ATS) and classroom provision.

This collaborative approach ensures that pupils receive coordinated support from education, therapy and specialist services, creating the best possible conditions for progress, wellbeing and long-term success.
