Reconnect & Re Engage
Our Reconnect, Re-engage and Regulate pathways provide a structured and supportive approach for pupils who may be experiencing barriers to learning, emotional dysregulation or disengagement from education. Through highly skilled staff, therapeutic approaches and personalised interventions, we help pupils develop the skills, confidence and resilience needed to succeed both in school and beyond.
Reconnect
Reconnect is a dedicated in-school provision designed to support pupils when they need time, space and specialist support to regulate emotions and successfully return to learning.
The provision operates from two dedicated Reconnect rooms, where pupils can either request support themselves or be referred by staff. Experienced members of our Care and Guidance Team provide adult co-regulation, helping pupils understand and manage their emotions, reflect on challenges and rebuild readiness for learning. The focus is always on supporting pupils to reconnect positively with their education, peers and school community.
Within Reconnect, pupils may:
Receive adult co-regulation support
Access sensory resources and calming activities
Complete learning and curriculum work in a supported environment
Develop emotional awareness and self-regulation strategies
Engage in restorative conversations
Receive targeted pastoral support before returning to class
Alongside daily support, Reconnect delivers a range of specialist interventions informed by analysis of attendance, behaviour, safeguarding and pastoral data. These interventions are designed to address identified barriers and promote positive attitudes, relationships and decision-making.
Intervention programmes may include:
Anger management
Understanding and challenging racism
Challenging sexism and misogyny
Anti-bullying interventions
Restorative practice programmes
Emotional regulation and conflict resolution
Diversity, equality and inclusion education
Respectful relationships and healthy choices
Identity-based bullying and discrimination awareness
Social skills and communication support
Self-esteem and confidence building programmes
Peer relationship and friendship interventions
The Maple School believes in restorative approaches, anti-discrimination programmes and early intervention strategies to help pupils understand the impact of prejudice, bullying and harmful behaviours while promoting inclusion and positive relationships.
Re-engage
Re-engage is a highly specialised provision for a small number of pupils who have become significantly disengaged from learning and require intensive support to successfully reconnect with education.
No pupil joins the school directly into Re-engage. Instead, pupils are referred following careful assessment and review of their individual needs.
The provision consists of a dedicated classroom with a maximum of six pupils, creating a calm, nurturing and highly personalised learning environment. Pupils participate in a targeted six-week programme designed to identify the barriers affecting engagement and develop effective strategies to overcome them.
During the programme, staff work closely with pupils to:
Understand barriers to learning
Rebuild confidence and motivation
Develop positive learning behaviours
Improve attendance and engagement
Strengthen emotional regulation skills
Support successful reintegration into classes
Each pupil benefits from specialist input, including advice from an Educational Psychologist, helping to inform personalised planning and intervention strategies. Curriculum delivery is carefully adapted to reflect each pupil's EHCP outcomes, learning needs and individual strengths, ensuring provision is meaningful, accessible and ambitious.
The Re-engage team is exceptionally well staffed and includes:
A class teacher overseeing provision
A dedicated room lead
Two teaching assistants
Throughout the programme, staff provide consistent co-regulated support, gradually preparing pupils for a successful return to their mainstream timetable and wider school life.
Regulate
Our Regulate provision forms an important part of our whole-school approach to supporting emotional wellbeing and behaviour.
All permanent members of staff are Team Teach Level 2 trained, ensuring a consistent, safe and positive approach to supporting pupils during periods of heightened anxiety, distress or dysregulation. Staff revisit training at least once each half term through our CPD offer.
A dedicated Regulate space is available when short-term physical co-regulation or intensive support is required. The environment provides pupils with a safe and structured space where trained staff can help them regain control, reduce stress and return to a regulated state.
Following support within Regulate, pupils are transitioned to Reconnect, where they receive further emotional support, reflection opportunities and guidance before returning to their learning.
Together, our Regulate and Reconnect pathways ensure pupils receive compassionate, skilled and timely support, enabling them to develop the emotional resilience and self-regulation skills needed to thrive in school and in life.
