Physical Development
Physical Development is delivered through a progressive curriculum that focuses on the development of physical competence, emotional wellbeing and preparation for adulthood. In Key Stage 2, pupils develop fundamental movement skills, confidence, cooperation and an understanding of how movement can support emotional regulation and wellbeing. As pupils progress into Key Stage 3, the curriculum builds resilience, functional fitness, teamwork, communication and independence through increasingly challenging and personalised activities. In Key Stage 4, learning becomes firmly rooted in preparation for adulthood, with a focus on physical activity for wellbeing, functional fitness for daily living and employment, leadership opportunities, personal goal setting and planning for lifelong participation in physical activity. Teaching is highly inclusive and adapted to meet individual needs, using activities such as sensory circuits, fitness challenges, yoga, leadership tasks, functional movement exercises and community-based physical opportunities. Throughout the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their progress, celebrate personal achievement and take increasing ownership of their health and wellbeing.
Physical Development Curriculum Intent
At Maple, Physical Development is designed to promote lifelong physical, emotional and social wellbeing through meaningful movement experiences that build confidence, independence and resilience. We recognise that physical development extends beyond traditional sport and competition, focusing instead on helping pupils understand the connection between movement, health, emotional regulation and future independence. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4, pupils develop fundamental movement skills, functional fitness, self-regulation strategies, teamwork, leadership and personal responsibility. Our curriculum ensures that every pupil can experience success, develop a positive relationship with physical activity and gain the knowledge and skills needed to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle beyond school.
The impact of our Physical Development curriculum is evident in pupils who are increasingly confident, resilient and physically active. Pupils develop improved coordination, strength, mobility and functional fitness alongside greater emotional regulation, self-esteem and wellbeing. Through opportunities to cooperate with others, demonstrate leadership, overcome personal challenges and work towards individual goals, pupils develop the transferable skills required for successful adult life, including perseverance, communication, responsibility and independence.
A key measure of impact is the range of recognised achievements and qualifications that pupils can access as part of their wider physical development journey. Pupils have opportunities to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh Award, including Bronze and Silver Awards and associated section certificates for Physical, Skills, Volunteering and Expedition, which develop resilience, teamwork, commitment and community participation. Pupils may also achieve qualifications such as the Level 1 Qualification in Sports Leadership, Level 2 Qualification in Sports Leadership, Bikeability, First Aid certification and a range of personalised accreditation pathways that celebrate individual strengths and successes.
By the time pupils leave Maple, they understand how physical activity contributes to both physical and mental wellbeing and have developed the confidence to engage in active lifestyles beyond school. They leave with practical strategies for maintaining their health, recognised achievements that demonstrate personal growth and leadership, and the independence required to access physical activity, recreation and community opportunities throughout adulthood.
In summary, our Physical Development curriculum ensures that pupils not only become healthier and more confident individuals but also leave school with meaningful experiences and nationally recognised achievements, including Duke of Edinburgh Awards and leadership qualifications, that prepare them for successful and fulfilling adult lives.
